WHAT'S COOKING!

Gordon Ramsay at Claridge's Hotel - London

Gordon Ramsay, the controversial, tempestuous former soccer player from Scotland, is considered to be the greatest chef in England. His talents are appreciated by many, including the Michelin Red Guide, which has awarded him their highest rating, 3 stars. Mr. Ramsay has opened a new restaurant in the old, beautiful and recently renovated Claridge's Hotel in Mayfair, in London, England. Claridge's first opened their doors for business in 1812 and recently went through a $75 million renovation, including a restoration of its dining room to its former 1930's Art Deco style

We bookedour reservations 4 months in advance and after arriving a little early were seated at a wonderful table which afforded us a great view of the restaurant. The decor was very elegant and sophisticated, yet very comfortable; not stuffy at all. The maitre'd asked if we were going to the theater that evening and we told him that Gordon Ramsay was our theater tonight. He replied, "I hope we will give you a good show", and indeed they did, as the British like to say.

For dinner the restaurant offers a 3 course prix fixe menu which cost 50 pounds per person including VAT. As in most good restaurants, especially those with a prix fixe menu, they served an amuse bouche (a gift from the chef) consisting of a creamed mint soup. Following the amuse we started with appetizers of Ravioli of Scottish Lobsters poached in lobster bisque and Roasted Breast of Quail on potatoes, both very good. For our main courses, we had Sautéed Wild Salmon and a very nice Roasted Lamb. For dessert, we chose the Chocolate Fondant and Black Cherry Clafouti. The servings were average size and moderately filling for me, less so for my husband. Following our dessert we moved to the lounge where we were served coffee along with chocolate truffles.

Overall it was a very nice evening, in a beautiful room, with excellent service; though at times the wait staff hovered a little too much. The food was lovely and the setting quite posh in Gordon Ramsay at Claridge's, a restaurant I would recommend you try if you are planning a trip to London.
